Chief Minister Faces Criminal Investigation Over Gun Sale Permit Comments

The chief minister of Malaysia's richest state is being investigated for criminal defamation after making critical remarks about the daughter of the Inspector-General of Police.

(Malay Mail Online) – SHAH ALAM, Dec 29 — Police are investigating Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali for criminal defamation over remarks critical of Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar earlier this year.

Investigators today questioned Azmin for over an hour regarding a speech uploaded on May 3, 2016, in which he called for an investigation on the IGP’s daughter obtaining a licence to sell firearms.

He is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code for criminal defamation and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) for improper use of network facilities.

Azmin was accompanied by his lawyer, N. Surendran, during the questioning at the Shah Alam district police headquarters.

“All I want to say is that it is really unnecessary to take a MB away from his duties,” Surendran said.

“Public servants are not above criticism,” he added.

Azmin said his time was being “wasted” in order to put pressure on him.

He also pointed out that Khalid had clarified that his daughter’s firearm sales permit was issued before he became IGP.
